Capileira is the 2nd highest village in all Spain, with Trevelez around the eastern flank the highest. We sit on the highest mountain in the entire Iberian Peninsula, Cerro Mulhacen, located inside the Sierra Nevada National Park, and by the bird approximately 15 miles to the Mediterranean Sea.
Capileira sits as the highest village on the southern flank in the Barranco Poqueria.
Further up the road public access within the National Park by automobile ends.
For bicyclists, the terrain and the peaks offer the highest ridable pass in all Europe.
Capileira is a happy and safe place, receiving thousands of tourists throughout the year.
It is a rural location with stunning, spectacular, and amazing views!
The pueblo village offers many restaurants, local specialty shops, chocolatiers, cheesemakers, pharmacy, groceries, and cultural events throughout the year.
Sheep, goats, horses, mules, cats and dogs are common throughout. Birds are prominent, we sit at approximately 5000 feet with Africa not too far away. The varying elevations of Mulhacen, the deep Barranco Poqueria, and the higher zones offer a wide range of habitat and migration stopovers.
Capileira is the gateway into hiking the mountains from the southern location. Views of the Mediterranean, and on a very clear day, the coastline of Africa can be seen from our vantage point.
