Maureen Sheldon is noted as a leading contributor to advanced printing technologies, business, and manufacturing solutions in the global environment. Listed as Inventor on European and US Patents, an award-winning Artist, she manages the curriculum and is Instructor at TransARTlantic Eksperimentum as well oversees the business Agent Quinze.
Eric is Director of Sales for enterprise systems at Kerr Consulting and main technician and Kitchen Elf at TransARTlantic Eksperimentum.
This is an introductory course for printmaking, no previous experience is necessary, that being said, we welcome all levels to experience the magic of Capileira and our ancient home.
While printmaking offers a vast array of techniques this workshop will focus on 4 formats, drypoint etching, monoprinting/monotype, block printing using linoleum, and Collagraph. The student will learn how to use the tools involved in each method, preparing plates, preparing the design, inking techniques, printing, and composition. We will review and demonstrate how flexible, diverse, and fun printmaking can be.
Content of the Workshop:
This is an 8 night, 6 working day course spanning 7 days. [check-in October 12th, workshop starting October 13th, break October 16th, last working day October 19th, check out on the 20th].
Each day begins at our property at 10:00 am. This will be after you have had breakfast at Finca los Llanos. After the morning welcome, we review work from the previous day, an overview for the current day, each day offering a variance of methods and focus. Time will pass quickly and we want you to feel a balance from the creative focus and exploration of the village. Lunch will be served at our property.
A group dinner the final night of the course, evenings are left for you to explore. Capileira has many restaurants with additional offerings in the neighboring villages of Bubion and Pampaneira.
Prior to the workshop a Zoom session will be scheduled for each workshop attendee. You will receive a set of plates and an etching needle. This will allow you to work on a project and have it mostly ready by the start of the workshop. We can fine tune and print from there. Drypoint etching will begin the week. This will involve looking at images from the Masters such as to view their skill at creating tone, texture, and shading.
Next up will be Monotype and Monoprinting. This is a big change in color, inks, and exploration. We will be using up to 3 plates and will utilize cutouts to create and enhance designs. You will learn plate preparation, prep for printing, the effect of multiple layers, registration techniques, and use of color.
Moving on we will work in relief using a linoleum block as the plate. Intricate designs are possible in this form as well are craft uses. Linoleum prints can make excellent note cards, labels, bookmarks, etc. The result of a design can be incorporated into a Monoprint used as a stamp to add texture of design.
We will finish the course using Collagraph methods to create an image. Collagraph is the building up of a plate to create a design. The end result can be embossed only or with the addition of ink.
Participants: 4 Participant minimum and 6 workshop attendees maximum.
Materials:
Materials are provided, ink, plates, paper, etc. You should bring your own personal drawing pad.

It is important to note that Capileira and the surrounding region is a steep terrain. The villages are ancient with steep streets, uneven walking, and is walking only. It is approximately 400 feet in elevation difference between the hotel and the bottom of the village where our studio and home is. We are in the oldest section of the village, walking only, the views are outstanding. Our property has at least 4 levels of terrace with stairs you will need to navigate.

TransARTlantic Eksperimentum cancelation policy
Cancelation Policy:
We have both a very generous and very strict cancellation policy because the workshops are small, additional vendors are involved, and your cancelling adversely affects our program. All workshops must be fully paid 50 days in advance. We collect a deposit payment of $600.00 at the time of registration of a workshop.
Should you decide to cancel your participation in advance of paying your balance, - we will refund your deposit minus a $150.00 cancellation fee.
If you must cancel within 60 days after paying your full fee and we can replace you with another attendee, we will cheerfully refund 100% of your monies you have paid minus $150.00 cancellation fee.
If we cannot replace you – you will forfeit 100% of the monies you have paid.
Please be sure when you sign up, if you must cancel, please do so as early as possible.
If TransARTlantic Eksperimentum must cancel, we will refund you 100% of the monies collected for the course workshop. We are not responsible for cost of travel, insurance, etc.
It is always recommended one considers purchasing travel insurance.
