Our October workshop, Introductory to Printmaking, is a busy and fun filled week!

This is our 3rd year offering this particular course.  Past participants have enjoyed this workshop very much.  They are kept busy all days, enough time to work on your own projects and projects designed to incorporate learned techniques.

There are so many genres in printmaking that we would need months to touch on all of them.  In these 5 full days we will focus our work in Intalio, Relief, and Planographic printmaking styles.  There may be 1 or 2 others thrown in the mix.

We start with Monotype where we can hone in on all the basics needed for the week.  Develop inking skills, understand working with multiple colors and multiple plates. We will learn how to cut and use masks and stencils, and incorporate collagraph and chine colle for added dimension.

Relief printing with linoleum carved blocks, and Intaglio with Dry Point Etching on two different plate types wrap up the week.  Students will design plates to be carved out of linoleum.  Design considerations and methods for design transfer to plate are reviewed.  Reverse imaging and layers of color are all part of the printmaking process.

The workshop is open to people of all levels but we particularly love people who say they don't have a create bone for this one.

This workshop is located in the village of Capileria at the TransARTlantic Eksperimentum Print Studio, which is in the Andalusian province of Granada Spain. This region is a Biosphere Reserve, noted for its unique biodiversity and cultural landscape. Capileria is the highest village on the southern flank of Mulhacén, the highest mountain in Continental Spain reaching 11,414 feet inside the Sierra Nevada National Park with the Mediterranean Sea less than 20 miles by the bird.

It is an historic region famous for its traditional Alpujarran architecture, a testament to its Moorish past and has earned the town its designation as an Historic-Artistic site. It is in this unique landscape that we have our print studio, located in one of the oldest homes in the village dating back 600+ years. For more than 40 years it has been home to Artists, a print studio, and workshops serving hundreds of people from all over the world.

We start with a Zoom session prior to the workshop to further overview what to expect, answer questions about the region, and help you prepare for a magical experience.

Upon your arrival we host a Reception and dinner meal on October 10th 2026 at the Hotel Finca los LLanos. The next morning, we meet you at the hotel and offer a walking tour of the village arriving at TransARTlantic Eksperimentum for our first creative day.

Our studio is attached to our ancient home here in Capileira Spain. It is a humble studio bedecked with a lot of capabilities and an outstanding perch from which to create. We have a wonderful property fit with a garden and terraces covered by grapevines for you to sit and do your work or simply relax and take in the views.

It is a property seemingly designed to inspire. We will feed you well and offer Spanish delights.

Workshop Attendees will be staying at the Hotel Finca los Llanos. The hotel sits at the top of the village and has outstanding views, a wonderful staff, an excellent dining room, organic gardens, and a saltwater pool. The hotel dining room serves 3 meals daily. You will be eating breakfast at the hotel covered by the workshop fee. The premium room is double occupancy and includes a balcony. If you bring a guest, they will have the breakfast fee and any other meals or drink you choose to have at the hotel.

The village has several restaurants, shops, bakeries, butcher, 2 groceries, an organic food store, a chocolatier, ice cream shop, shops selling local products, a pharmacy, ATM, Art galleries and more. There will be plenty to keep you busy.  In addition, the 2 other villages on the southern flank, Bubión & Pampaneria are also worth checking out and offer many Artisan delights.  People come from all over the world to take in the world class hiking, the regional food, and the welcoming nature of the locals.

Workshop hours start at 10:00 am and run until 5:00 pm daily.

All Materials are provided, ink, plates, paper, studio equipment, etc.

 Language:

The course will be delivered in English.

 Transportation:

We do not provide transportation.  Our experience is people come in from many directions. Some arrive early to acclimate and others stay on longer. What we can say is the closest city is Granada. There are rental cars, private drivers, and ALSA bus lines run 3 schedules a day to and from Granada to Capileria - Capileria to Granada.

 Terrain:

It is important to note that Capileira and the surrounding region is a steep terrain. The village is ancient with steep streets, uneven walking, and is walking only in much of the village and to our studio. It is approximately 400 feet in elevation difference between the hotel and the bottom of the village where our studio is located.

We look forward to seeing you!

Maureen & Eric
